If you are
lucky enough to live in an area that gets to experience all the seasons at
their height, then you understand the ups and downs of frequent snowfalls.
However, you may not have heard of some of these ideas for dealing with the
cold white stuff.
Pass the Salt
If your
forecast is for snow tomorrow you can prep the windshield tonight so you don’t
get the hard frost that takes forever to scrape off your car. If you don’t
have a supply of deicer, you can use items you normally find in the kitchen.
Grab your saltshaker and empty it into an old sock. All you have to do is to
rub that old sock all over the glass. Try to follow a consistent pattern so you
get the entire window and rub fairly firmly. It’s important to note that you
should not do this very often because damage to your windshield may occur.
However, it’s great for a quick fix.
If you are
better with a spray bottle, you can use the juice from your salty pickles. You
might also use some rum, gin, vodka or any clear alcohol or go with the cheaper
rubbing alcohol. If you rub with a dry cloth to dry it after it has been
sprayed on the windows, it can help them keep from getting so icy.
Watch Your Top
It’s not
only your driveway and walkways that need the snow removed. You may want to
consider how much snow is falling on top of your house. You can arrange for
a roof
snow load measurement to find out how much
your roof can handle. If you are reaching a critical point, you should hire a
professional company to get the snow off before you end up with a collapse.
Dig out the Shovel
Most
likely, you will need a shovel to dig out at least your stairs and walks. Be
sure to use a plastic shovel if your steps or walk are made of brick. If you
have more than an inch of two of snow, you will want to pull out your
snowblower or snow thrower.
Don’t sit around waiting until the snow stops falling,
however, because it will continue to get heavier. The sooner you start, the
more likely it is that you will be able to clear the snow more easily. If you
need to purchase a snowblower before the winter season arrives, be sure you
understand how much snow your area usually gets. If you receive fewer than nine
inches, your one-stage machine can likely handle it. If you often get more snow
than that, you’ll want something that is more heavy-duty
