On 9thMay
2017, FSSAI issues strict guidelines regarding the usage of Performance
Enhancing Drugs in body & muscle building supplements. FSSAI reminded, as
per the section 3 (j), Food safety & Standards Act 2006, “Food whether
processed, somewhat processed or organic, primary food extent or ingredients
explained in clause (Zk) is acceptable but does not contain animal feed until
or unless treated for specific usage for human consumption, medical products or
harvesting cosmetic sedative. Even, according to section 22, Food Safety &
Standards Act 2006, Food testing for special nutritional purposes,
nutraceuticals or body building supplements should also not allow to use any
kind of narcotic drug or psychotropic element. For more information, explore

Thus, according
to these rules of Food Act the FSSAI has clearly indicated that Food operator
must obey these rules and produce health supplements without using any banned materials
as muscle building food have gained much popularity among youth and
sportspersons. However, it will be profitable for deceitful food testing & manufacturers but
banned materials endangering the health of innocent customers. Even the worst
part is, nothing has mentioned on labels. Nowadays, worldwide various cases
have reported against drawback of using health supplements, India positions
third. Hence, supplement manufacturers requisite to be extra thoughtful
regarding ingredients of the body building food, hazardous ingredients should
be avoided.
Thus, FSSAI
has given strict guidelines to all Food Safety Commissioners in the States as
well as Union territories to organize a special inspection to check for the
usage of prohibited ingredients in health supplements.
Besides, they have also instructed to inspect labels thoroughly and if find
anything suspicious, send the sample immediately to NADA (National Anti-Droping
Agency).
FSSAI has
also specified that strict action will be commenced against any food
manufacturers on the usage of performance enhancing drugs. For any complaint regarding

What is Performance Enhancing Drugs?
These kinds
of drugs mainly used to enhance your physical abilities. In this competitive
era, most of the athletes take different kind of supplements to boost their
stamina and performance ability in various field. But, most of them are unaware
about the ingredients as not mentioned on the label. However, consistent usage
of performance enhancing drugs leaves bad impact on your health. After knowing
everything still, India rank third in the list of doping violation cases.
Thus, to
spread the awareness regarding these harmful drugs especially among the
youngsters, FSSAI has introduced a list of banned substances called ‘The World
Anti-Doping Code International Standard.’
This list
comprises names of materials and procedures banned at all time, such as,
Anabolic Androgenic Steroids, Diuretics and Masking Agents, Beta-2 Agnostics,
Hormone and Metabolic Modulators, Peptide Hormones, Growth Factors, Creatine
and Stimulants, Narcotics, Beta Blockers, Glucocorticoids, Alcohol and
Cannabinoids.
