How To Steam Clean A Carpet

Cleaning the carpet is not a task that will be your favorite any time soon. It takes so much time and a lot of effort. That is if you do not know how to do it right. Steam cleaning is an effective way to remove stubborn stains on the carpet. It also disinfects it and kills fleas, bedbugs, mold spores, and germs. Your carpet will be as clean as new. It is also guaranteed safe for pets and kids. You can remove spot stains, dirt, and grim on carpets if you use the right attachment to your steam mop. You will need a regular vacuum cleaner to remove dust and dirt first.

·         Clear the area. You should remove all furniture, toys and other items on the carpet. Most steam carpet steam mops are usually operated by pushing or pulling them. A lot of clutter on the carpet will make the process more difficult and slower. You can wrap the legs of heavy furniture with a waterproof tape. This will protect them from the hot steam when you glide the mop nearby. You can use aluminum foil to prevent moisture if you do not have flex tape. It is better to clean your baseboards before proceeding. You can use a damp piece of cloth to clear all the dirt and dust.

·         Vacuum the carpet. Vacuum the carpet twice. This will remove hair, dust particles, crumbs, and any other loose dirt. Carpet steaming will dissolve stains. It will restore the fabric but will not remove solid dirt. Run the vacuum in one direction for your first round. Pick as many dust particles as possible. Vacuum in the opposite direction for your second round. Thorough vacuuming will pick up large debris and even some parasites such as bed bugs. Spend more time in high traffic areas. There will be more debris and deposits there. A proper vacuum job loosens the fibers of your carpet. This is a perfect preparation for easy deep cleaning using a steam mop.
·         Treat spot stains before steaming. Carpets will lose its beauty when there are stains. Such as lipstick and spills of food and wine. Pet urine and poop can also leave dirty spots. Treat the spots first before you vacuum and steam clean it. Blot a piece of cloth with a carpet stain remover then dab the spot. Make sure it soaks in the stain treatment solution. Leave it for a few minutes before you start steam cleaning.
·         Prepare the carpet steam cleaner. Remove the water tank if it is detachable. Follow instructions that come with your steam cleaner to fill the tank. Do not put anything that the manufacturer did not recommend. Attach the tank back and plug it in a power outlet. Wait a few minutes for the water to heat up to a steaming temperature. You can use a detergent of your choice. Or you can use a vinegar solution for a safer and more natural cleaning solution.
·         Run the steam cleaner on the carpet. You can run the steam cleaner from one corner of the carpet to the other. Make sure you make clean straight lines and overlap the previous line. It is better to run over the same line twice if you use soap or carpet shampoo. The first run will inject the soap over the fabric. The second run will suck it up together with the dirt.
·         Allow the carpet to dry. You may need to allow your carpet about 4 to 12 hours to dry. And for all the moisture to escape. Running your dehumidifier on a high setting in the middle of the room will help your carpet dry faster. Do not forget to open the windows to allow moisture to escape and your carpet to dry. Place fans near the carpet and point them downwards.
