Bookkeeping is a serious business. This staff member is
responsible for your financial reports and tax payments. Therefore, in hiring
someone, you want to find not only an accountant who understands tax code but
also one who will be easy to work with. In your search, keep in mind these
three qualities.
Knowledgeable
Spend time interviewing potential candidates, asking about their
experience and certifications. In addition, ask about former clients and how
they handle particular situations. For example, create a fictional scenario.
How would it get handled? Make sure the person demonstrates awareness and good character.
Tech-Savvy
As a member of the UCPAA, the accountant
should not only understand the tax laws but should be well aware of up-to-date
software and tech services available to make the process smoother. Ask your CPA
about which programs he or she will use, including why they work best. It's no
longer a life of books and paper. The computer can service your taxes well.
Friendly
Don't trust your books with someone who isn't willing to speak
with you. Instead, seek out someone who wants to converse, politely, about
paperwork. You should feel comfortable picking up the phone and inquiring about
information.
On your hunt for
someone to work with your books, think beyond numbers. Select a person who will
stand by your side.
