Buying
your first home can be daunting, to say the least. Especially if you’re not
particularly handy or you can’t afford to call a repair person every time
something goes awry. You might think you’re in luck because there are
thousands, if not millions, of online tutorials showing you things like how to
replace your toilet. However, there are some repairs you should never try to
attempt on your own.

Sewer Repairs
Long-term
renters generally never have to think past a clogged toilet, so bigger sewage
problems can be particularly overwhelming. Also, if you’re a new homeowner,
chances are you don’t have your own sewer repair products. That’s okay. In fact, it’s probably for the best
because if you don’t know how to properly use them, you could do more harm than
good. Sewer lines can be located close to gas lines and if any digging is
required, you want to get a professional involved.
Electrical
There is a
good reason that electricians are required to have a certification before they
can begin to work. Working with electricity is dangerous. Not only can you risk
shocking yourself, but connecting the wrong wires can cause even bigger
problems than you started with. It’s best not to rely on YouTube for
electrical issues.
Gas Furnace Maintenance
Hopefully
this one goes without saying, but anytime you suspect repairs are needed on
anything that uses natural gas or propane, please call for help. It should be
relatively easy to find a Heating,
Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
specialist in your area.
Irrigation Maintenance
If you
start noticing water pooling in your yard you might be tempted to try your hand
at archaeological excavation. Please don’t. Again, once you start digging you
can easily break other utility lines and/or make matters worse.
Rest assured, you will get better at home maintenance as
the years progress. In the meantime, please call a professional when you need
help.
